Absent your location, price point, and style preferences I would suggest the following:
High End: Bograds, Riverdale NJ
Mid-Market: Suburban Furniture, Succasunna, NJ (has frequent sales and promotions)
Big Box: Ikea, Paramus & Elizabeth, NJ (Elizabeth is in a development area that has a reduced sales tax of 3.5%, half the NJ rate of 7%)
I've also gotten lucky catching some great sales at Bloomingdales in Hackensack. ABC Carpet is in South Hackensack; many swear by them but I'm not a fan. Huffman Koos might also be a high end possibility but I always found the price/value ratio pretty bad. I would avoid Jennifer Convertibles, Bob's Discount Furniture and Raymour and Flanigan like the plague.
My friends went to Bograd's then did a little internet shopping on a few North Carolina furniture sites and found the exact same (as in manufacturer) family room sectional, master bedroom suite, huge dining room table with chairs, "library" table and chairs for thousands less.
Bograd's matched the prices rather than scrap the "deal".
Read online reviews of the different manufacturers and stores. We recently bought quite a bit of furniture and looked in many of the places mentioned here. We did very well at Suburban Furniture in Succasunna. We also bought something at Bob's in spite of the online reviews and I wish we had not made that purchase. Should have followed the reviews and my gut. Read the reviews on Ashley's.

This would be easy for them. Bograd's has always been a wonderful family business. I'm sure that they deal with many "high-maintenance"-type (fusspots), too.
