I think people need to know how your daughter plans to commute to Rutgers. Public transportation or by car and what part of Rutgers she plans to attend. The science/engineering buildings are REALLY far from the agriculture buildings. They are actually in different towns/cities and can be 30-40 minutes apart in traffic

East Brunswick is a very diverse town, suburban and 10 minutes from Rutgers. Your daughter can even take local buses to New Brunswick if she didn't want a car right away. Car insurance for young people in NJ is very expensive. Many parents pay their kids insurance for them.

I am new to city-data so if I am doing anything wrong please bear with me.

I am a single mother with my 17-year old daughter.

I am looking for a nice safe area that we can live in peacefully. I will be working in a firm near the Edison/ Piscataway area (still not sure which firm to choose so far) and my daughter will be attending Rutgers - New Brunswick. We are not from NJ (currently living in London), obviously so we are not very familiar with the area.

I will be making around $72K a year and we want to rent for around $2,000 a year, is this reasonable? We want to rent a small house with a small backyard (since we have 2 golden retrievers).

Our criteria is:

-A safe area. (Very Important)
-Away from the hudson river (hurricanes) -(not a major aspect)
-Family oriented environment (important)
-clean (important)
-Accesible to NYC (My daughter wants to intern in media companies/newspapers in NYC) (Very Important)
-Somewhat accesible to Philly for some visits? (Not important)
-Diverse/ Tolerance towards muslims or Arabs (We are Half Arabs/Half Brits - muslims) (Very Important)
-Very close to Rutgers- New Brunswick (VERY IMPORTANT)- I don't want my daughter to have a sufferable commute.

So, these are the major criteria. I don't mind commuting up to 50 mins but I don't want my daughter to have a sufferable commute as I have mentioned.

Thanks for your time and help.

If there is anything else you need to know to help me out, please tell me.

Also, if my rent price is not very reasonable, I guess we can stretch it a bit but tell me how much I should pay in a good area.

Thanks Again.

Jayna H.
Don't know if anybody told you but NJ is the most crowded state in the US. So you will want to live close to both Rutgers and Piscataway/Edison.
Do not look outside Piscataway (River road area), Highland Park and the Highland Park South side of Edison.

Nothing will make your life in NJ more miserable then a long commute.
Your daughter can catch a train to NYC in New Brunswick or Edison at the Stelton Station.

Do you really expect somebody living on the other side of the ocean to know which communities are located in any particular county?

+1

Because of the traffic congestion and the time that commuting takes in NJ, I found someone's earlier suggestion of Paterson and Clifton to border on the bizarre.

Google is your friend.

A quick search of Middlesex County will show where it is located on a map, as well as what towns are located within it. Luckily for us here in NJ, our counties aren't very big so there aren't 100 municipalities to choose from within the county - only about 25. While on the subject, I agree. Middlesex County. I don't know Middlesex County well enough, though, to recommend specific areas.

I do have family that used to live in Sayreville and are now in South Amboy, though, and I wouldn't recommend either. OP, you mentioned you're worried about flooding from hurricanes. The Hudson isn't your only concern, or at least it shouldn't be, and it definitely isn't if you're going to be in central Jersey and not Hudson County. Stay away from the Raritan Bay and River (Middlesex and Monmouth Counties, so the general area you're looking into, especially Middlesex). My family members had to move from Sayreville because Sandy flooded their neighborhood (following years of other floods) and the government is actually buying out their street to knock down homes because it is too dangerous to live there. Last I heard their former street will be a park.

Most of the NJ suburbs are safe.

There are prejudiced people everywhere, but NJ is very diverse as far as religion and ethnicity so for the most part you should be fine.

I just went to our library and the librarian was wearing a hajib. I also watched the NJ Marathon this morning and there were a number of young Muslim women in the race as well.

That's great, neither of us wear Hijab but that was reassuring. I was sort of worried and nervous. Thank you!

If the OP wants both a safe environment and a commute to New Brunswick that will be relatively quick, then the suggestion of living in Paterson borders on the bizarre, IMHO. And, while Clifton is surely safer than Paterson, the commute from either Paterson or Clifton to New Brunswick is long, arduous, and potentially expensive.

The OP's original idea of living in Edison or Piscataway is definitely the way to go in terms of both safety and close proximity to New Brunswick.

Its definitely $2k a month. Thank you very much.

As far as transportation, she will be definitely be transporting by car and she is going to attend the Communication and Arts and Sciences building (Journalism and Economics Double Major hopefully).

I really Appreciate all your help!
