I just finished my master degree in L.A. And I'd like to start a my career in NJ/NY. My friend recommended Newark because its easy access to NYC. Is there other options? I read some threads which says owning a car is not necessary. How to explain this? Because I own a car now. Thank you for all your help.

Where are you coming from? L.A., CA

Why are you moving? NY

Where will you be working ? If NYC, what part of NYC? Still need to land a job.

Will you buy or rent? RENT

What is your budget ? $700 for room share. $12-15k for 1 bed\bath apartment(studio?). Prefer Room share

What kind of place are you looking for ? 2-hour round trip to NYC. QUIT, SAFE

Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? NO
Do you need/want good public schools? NO

Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc)

SAFE

List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short commute, etc)

safety, easy parking, outdoor activities

If safety is your #1 concern, then Newark is probably not for you, though some parts of the Ironbound section might work.

Are you saying that you would like to keep your car or not? If keeping a car, it opens up many more possibilities, especially for outdoor activities and safety.

Yes, I'd prefer to keep my car for the moment.

I think Montclair would be a good town for you to look at. It's on train line so decent access to the city. Reasonable availability of room shares available, and parking for your car should be generally available. Nice downtown area, but plenty of parks, etc too. And you'll feel a lot safer than in Newark.

While there are some decent areas in Newark, if safety is that high on your list, I have to agree with HalfFull on his suggestion. The good thing is there are smaller towns in the area that fit your criteria (or train accessible like Edison, South Orange, Woodbridge, etc.) However, I don't think the rent will meet your criteria.

The apartments across from the prudential center are stunning and on the cheap. There are many young professionals living there. Still, you must know the stigma of Newark

Newark is a city of many areas-some better than others. The pay is decent, the public transportation works well, and rent can be lower there than in NYC. The kids are rough, but it's a great place to break into teaching, and since it is (last I checked) a Title One district, you can get help paying back school loans! Good luck whatever your choice!

Well, you can work in Newark and live someplace like Elizabeth, which is 10 minutes away and has many safe areas and reasonable apartments/duplexes to rent.

Where did you get the idea that the OP is a Teacher?, Just curious, because in their posts I did not see any mention of a degree in teaching nor a desire for a career in teaching. I even checked their profile, again no mention of teaching. (not that there is anything at all wrong with being a teacher....)

Ha! I had the same question. The only thing I can think is that "L.A." was read as "language arts", while it appears to mean "Los Angeles" in this case....?
