Yep, the bears would kill and eat the dogs and leave you alone.
Maybe we need to bring back this lovely sport:
Bear-baiting was popular in England until the nineteenth century. From the sixteenth century, many bears were maintained for baiting. In its best-known form, arenas for this purpose were called bear-gardens, consisting of a circular high fenced area, the "pit", and raised seating for spectators. A post would be set in the ground towards the edge of the pit and the bear chained to it, either by the leg or neck. A number of well-trained hunting dogs, usually Old English Bulldog, would then be set on it, being replaced as they got tired or were wounded or killed. In some cases the bear was let loose, allowing it to chase after animals or people. For a long time, the main bear-garden in London was the Paris Garden, that section of the Bankside lying to the west of The Clink, at Southwark.
It's shocking how hard the anti-bear hunt group is pushing these ridiculous yarns. I've heard everything from the hikers provoked the bear, to the hiker OD'ed (because who doesn't like to hike into the middle of a 500 acre wilderness to do drugs? ), to the other hikers in the party beat up the hiker and left him for the bear to finish off. Once again, Mark Twain's old adage proves to be true:
"A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on it's shoes."

Again, claims with no basis in fact whatsoever. A total of 46 bears were taken during the 1st phase of bear hunting in the state between 1958 and 1970. Numbers had dwindled from the late 1800s to the 1950s, but to say that there were no bears before 1980 is beyond absurd.
njkate, are you seriously going to believe a document the government has issued? I have been living here in the same woodsy town in northern nj for 60 years. When we were growing up and going out to play, Daddy would say 'watch out for the mountain lions'; not the bears because there weren't any. We first started noticing them in the 70's and more prevalent in the 80's.
Gotta laugh when all the bergen county people come up on the weekends going to Norvin Green. We always say "Feel free to take home all the ticks and snakes that you want."
P.S. - I hope you didn't believe that CDC guy when he said there's no threat from that man with ebola.

Daddy had it backwards. The mountain lions disappeared between the 1830s and 1880s along with the timber wolves and elk.

And, when that fact was revealed to the mayor of Franklin Twp several years ago, he launched a protest over the issue of the township never having been notified by state officials that they were doing this.
I believe that, in the wake of that kerfuffle, the state has stopped releasing bears in Franklin Twp, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they have departed from the area. A few days ago, while driving on one of the rural roads in the Pleasant Plains area, I spied a sign regarding the date of the beginning of the bear hunt in that area.
Impossible to seperate wildlife management from politics and the state's actions are at best sometimes swarmy and should be challenged. During JC's purchased reign, BB news was kept on the downlow.
Yearly bears in Branchburg, Raritan and Bridgewater. Most can't comprehend the size of territory bears need. then there was that bear that was bagged and tagged up around Paramus and again near exit 8a Jamesburg area. That had to be some story. Beg he got a ride on a state truck.
Ever notice the wording on relocating nusiance animals?
Used to be a couple of paragraphs if that.
Now you need to consult a lawyer to figure out the rules and if you get past that, the logic that gave birth to the new regs is mind boggling. State used to hire guys with a love for the out doors and common sense....RU ag school was the source of most of those candidates, not so much anymore.
Apparently some anti hunter activists are on a par with BBs and are unable to read. Wonder if that trial is still being delayed, postponed and moving around jurisdictions?
