Last time I moved from another state to NJ they didn't just switch my license out,I actually had to take a written test.
Is that normal?

No I don't believe it is, unless your license expired they do not make you take a test. Unless this is something new that they've changed and I'm unaware of.

You are on a computer. How hard is it to check NJ's website?
State of New Jersey - Motor Vehicle Commission
"Knowledge and road tests are waived as long as you have a valid, non-provisional driver license issued by any of the 50 states"

When I moved to NJ and transferred my license about 25 years ago, I had to take the written test, which seemed ridiculous. Glad they updated that policy at some point.

FYI the so called written test is done on a computer. Multiple choice. There is a website online where you can practice, not DMV's but some other site, you can keep taking it until you ace it. That sort of is fair since who remembers things like penalties and such stuff.

As far as I remember they were like trick questions in there causing me to fail, and it said if you fail a certain number of times you couldn't take it for awhile. I was actually contemplating registering in another state.

There are a few questions that most drivers would not readily know like number of days for something or fines or similar. The website I mentioned you can keep banging through the practice tests until you have it down, but not sure if they will make you do that or not.

Do they take away your former DL or do they punch a hole through it?
