My husband and I are researching retirement communities in the N. J. area. Someone recommended Cedar Glen Lakes in Whiting very highly. We don't drive (can't because of eye conditions) and was wondering how convenient this area is to supermarkets, banks, drugstores, doctors' offices, libraries, etc. Is it completely impossible to get around in Whiting without a car or is there local bus service? Also, is there bus service between NYC and the Whiting area?
A reply would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
It's a relatively quiet are that has tons of retirees. Plenty of stores, banks, doctors, etc. in the vicinity. Driving definitely makes it a lot easier. Many of the communities have regular bus service that can get you to the market and doctors but you'd want to check that out with your specific community. Local bus service can get you to the mall. I'm not sure about regular bus service to NYC, but communities arrange for frequent trips to the city and other trips within driving distance.
Some of the senior communities have Dial-a-Ride services. Others have organized community volunteers to help those who don't drive. As HalfFull recommends, check out ride assistance with the specific community.

Toms River or Lakewood has bus service to NYC on a daily basis. Me, I would opt to go to Toms River over Lakewood.
Local free service if your community does not offer one
