The demographics of Jersey City are always changing. My cousins grew up in Jersey City and attended St. Peters Prep. Back then the schools was majority white, but did have significant numbers of Filipinos. They graduated in 1984 and 1987. From what I remember downtown JC seemed to be mostly Puerto Rican. the gentrification of Downtown has resulted in more white people and less Latinos over the last 30 years. The higher cost to live in Jersey City has forced many people to move, but many also made out well by selling homes they bought for less than 100K for 500K.

when I first moved to JC in 1996, my rent was just $500/month for a one bedroom on Jersey Ave near the Path. Rented from a Puerto Rican who lived with his family on the first 2 floors. He had bought the 4 story brick row home for $30,000 and sold it to me for $150,000 in 1997...I sold it for $700,000 in 2006. A lot of people who sold in the 90s are upset seeing the home values continue to rise.

Yeah PR tend to be past 14th street. 700k? Jesus. What a rip! ROFL no greenspace, concrete jungle, I still wouldn't run outside at night in downtown JC. These people are idiots.

I find it odd that the people who migrated from the 3rd world, received none of the affirmative action of other minorities (in fact we have it the toughest on high school and college admittance), nor the easy 6 weeks paid full benefits jobs of teaching, police like whites, who struggled, ended up as the most educated and well off minorities in this nation got kicked out of the places they originally lived. For me, from the ethnic American perspective, it speaks of the demise of the American dream.

What are your thoughts on this my fellow AAs?
Well you can always leave the USA.

Gentrification effects all;it does NOT care about color or race, only $$$!

Do not have enough money to stay in JC?

Move then.

Nobody is forcing you to stay in Jc,otherwise pay up.
