Hello...

This maybe off topic but thought of asking in this forum...

I am looking at two option in the house, one has gas oven and the other electronic oven. The sales agent tells me that electric oven will be too expensive operating wise. We don't use oven everyday.. maybe once or twice a week for 30 mins.

My question is that does it make a big difference in the running cost wise?

Any tips/info will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Gas ovens usually cost less to operate than electric ovens. However, you need to take into consideration the model, make, year of the appliances too. Newer ovens will typically be more efficient in terms of gas or electric usage than older ones.

Furthermore, if you plan on upgrading an electric oven to a new gas one, be aware that gas ovens cost more than electric ovens...so you need to figure out how long it will take to break even on the gas oven's operating cost vs the initial higher cost of the unit itself. And that is assuming there's already a gas line in place.

I don't think its a significant cost difference UNLESS you use your oven an awful lot. I have a gas range with an electric oven (more expensive). Supposedly an electric oven controls temperature better than a gas oven and does not release CO2 and water into the oven either. So if you like baking you might prefer an electric oven. An electric cooktop is a different story. No serious chef cooks on electric burners!

Our current 'upscale' range has a gas cooktop and electric ovens. In a previous home we had a separate gas cook top and electric ovens. We've always been pleased with this combination and prefer it.

BUT...if you only use the oven a few times a week it shouldn't be the 'tie breaker' in selecting a house (or are you designing a new kitchen?...in which case I also wouldn't use the RE agent for such advice...talk to appliance people and cooks). The extra operational cost shouldn't be much compared to other things.

I will add that a 'mistake' we made that we'd would change in the next house would be to use a gas DRYER...it would probably be better and certainly cheaper to operate over time, though the appliance cost might be higher.

We also have gas hot water heater and are pleased with that compared to electric. This appliance's operating cost would be more substantial.

Thanks everyone for the insight. This will be a new kitchen so we have an option to select gas range (gas stove and oven) or separate gas stove and dual wall electric oven. We were leaning toward the second option; gas cooktop and dual wall oven. Based on the feedback here and my friend Google , it seems like there isn't much operating cost difference so dual oven it is

Thanks again!

This. It's replaceable equipment, not the roof.

Electric stove is not super expensive to operate - but gas is preferable to most people.

I grew up with gas but now prefer electric.
