I am a new member to this forum and I find it very useful. I will start my full time job this summer with salary only around 60,000 (pretax). I work on 3xx Madison Avenue, NYC, NY and really can not afford an expensive place. I live alone and do not really need any special requirements. I just want to save money and reduce the time to get to work everyday. I will highly appreciate if you guys could please advise me an area where could I find such a place. Thanks for your support!
I would recommend renting a place is Sunnyside or Astoria in Queens. You'll get more for your money in Sunnyside. You could also try a share in a 2br or 3br in Hoboken or Downtown jersey city.
Agree. Staying on the MTA train lines instead of spending money on an MTA pass with your NJ Transit or PATH will be one of the may things that drives your budget. Think New York City instead of NJ.
The 300 range of Madison is easily walkable from the bus terminal and pretty walkable from Herald Square. You probably would not need an MTA pass living in Jersey, although the cost of a zone 2 monthly bus pass is comparable to the MTA monthly. You can usually get some good sublet deals with roommates around Weehawken, which is generally quicker to midtown than Astoria. There are enough amenities walking distance that you wouldn't need a car, but if you're looking for the quintessential city living experience, NJ probably isn't the right option.
Guys, thank you all for helpful comments. I really appreciate that. So I am gonna look up for a place at Sunnyside, Queens. Please let me know if you think I should try other places too.
Thank you and I am so sorry for my late response. Is there any chance that I could get a 600 per month room?
I know people who have done this and I've rented a room for not much more myself at one point. This is totally doable.
It means a smaller room in a shabbier apartment in an unfashionable area with a relatively longer commute to Madison Avenue and probably 3+ people to a single bathroom ... it's up to you to decide whether the few extra grand in savings is worth it; an extra 300 a month to your budget would go a long way and you'd still be able to bank a large chunk of your paycheck.

Gotta have nerves of steel when a storm comes through though.
I rented a room with roommates years ago in Harlem. I think it was around $500+ and that was maybe 10 years ago? I had no issues with living there, and it was very convenient to downtown.
