Hello,

I am a recent graduate from West Virginia University. During my stay at Morgantown WV I worked on campus and I have a W2 for the year 2014 and I did not get a refund of 2013 state tax as I did not file the right application. Now, I moved to New Jersey for work and I have a W2 from my current employer for the year 2014. Can someone suggest a way to claim the 3 W2's from two different states (WV and NJ). My visa status is F1 working on EAD. Thanks in advance

-Sai

Mixing states is not that difficult, it's just more math on your part. But you might find it worthwhile to drop a lot of stuff with someone who does this for a living to actually make sure you get the right answer instead of going to an audit with the phrase "but on the internet they said..."

You will have to file as a NJ resident and complete the section on the state income tax form called "credit for taxes paid to other jurisdictions. This means that it's likely you have to FIRST fill out a WV nonresident income tax form. Also, since it sounds as if you lived in both states during the year, you'll have to figure out the percentages which could affect both taxes. WV likely has a nonresident or part-year resident form. If I were you, I'd just spring for the TurboTax versions for each state and let the program walk you through it. I'd say "just read the instruction booklets" but I figure if you're asking on here, you didn't want to figure it out yourself. Let technology do the work for you!
