I am really at a loss. My husband and I work in opposite directions. He's in Tarrytown and I'm working in Edison. We are looking in the $325k range and want a home with some distance from the neighbors. We don't want to live on top of the house next door . No children and no plans for any but we do have dogs so space is a must. Anyone have any ideas so I can narrow down my search?

Parsippany area could work. My brother lives there and works near Tarrytown, the commute up 287 isn't awful. Getting to Edison will be more of a headache, but doable.

Try Woodland Park--there is some inventory there in your price range.

The only drawbacks are the houses can be close together in some neighborhoods (you should still get some sort of yard however) and there are some neighborhoods in a flood zone. On the other hand, what's nice is you could live near Garret Mountain which could be a great place for you to bring your dogs. (However the dogs must be leashed).

The town is listed as 34 miles from both Tarrytown, NY and Edison.

I don't know what kind of jobs you guys hold.. but instead of going 34 miles each way for both of you, I'd live close to one of your work places, and have the other find another job close by (if possible)

The problem with Tarrytown is that your husband is going to have to deal with Tappan Zee Bridge traffic every morning and afternoon. I've seen that traffic and 287 heading back towards NJ has brutal traffic that can back up for miles in the afternoon, and then the Parkway south backs up too during the evening rush. Your best bet would be to look for something in Bergen County. That will make it easier on your husband, and your commute southbound towards Edison shouldn't be terrible as you're mostly going against the normal commuter traffic.
