Hello. My wife and I considering moving somewhere near Princeton NJ. From what I've read, the town of Princeton is out of our price range which tops out at 300k. I've found some decent places for sale in the surrounding areas (ie Pennington, West Windsor, Lawrencevill, etc) that appear to be safe. My question is, can I buy a place for under 300k in Mercer county and have it be in a safe and clean neighborhood or is that out of the question for our price range?
We're moving from Colorado and would love to partake in some of the culture that this area has to offer, but from what I've read I'm not sure it would be worth it. Thank you for your time.

Reason: wrong title
Pennington, West Windsor and Robbinsville are very safe and wonderful communities, with excellent schools.
Parts of Hamilton, Lawrence and Ewing border on the City of Trenton. The closer to Trenton, the cheaper the houses for a reason.
If you can swing the housing prices, I would recommend any of the first 3 communities mentioned.
Good luck with your search!
I seriously doubt you'll find anything less that $300K in Pennington or West Windsor. Not to sound discouraging, but that price MIGHT buy a small condo...
Pennington and West Windsor is just as expensive as Princeton. Try the Steinert school district of Hamilton, Robbinsville, Monmouth Junction, most of Lawrenceville. All of these towns have beautiful, safe neighborhoods.
I'm not sure you'd be able to get anything for your price range. I have a 1,500 sq. foot house on 1/4 acre in South Lawrence (not too far from the Trenton border) and I'd put it on the market for about $315,000 if I was going to sell. Oddly enough, townhomes are more money than that (probably because my house was built in the 1920's). I'm not sure I'd describe South Lawrence as beautiful...it has it's nice areas though and it definitely is safe. Our township does a pretty good job of keeping our taxes down too, they're pretty low by NJ standards.
I am going to say that if you want to spend that much, be prepared to get a small fixer upper, unless you are willing to live in a place like Ewing, southern end of Lawrence, Hamilton(which I would not consider personally)..if you live in those areas, you may get something.
For that price range, you are going to have difficulty.
My small townhome should sell for around $380-400,000 in this market
you could also try moving your search to include Burlington County. Bordentown is nice, has good schools, and is easy to commute from.
