My apologies because I don't mean any disrespect to the people of paterson but I've heard so many bad stories about it. I'm not usually a very scared person but I don't want to take chances in a place known to be dangerous.
I wanted to go to the city center mall and to the Lambert castle
I'm a suburban white dude in my late 30's and I've been to City Center mall many times both in the day and at night. I've never been scared or felt unsafe. Can't comment on other area.
I wouldn't say the whole city is completely but most of that towns a dump. I wouldn't go there unless I had to. Downtown isn't the worst but consider the fact there's drug fiend panhandlers around trying to hustle people for money or people looking to break in or steal vehicles, plus parkings always a pain. If your white and the cops see you cruising through the high crime areas they usually assume your a drug addict looking to score and pull you over to harass you. I'm not saying this is all the time but reflecting personal experience , to each there own.The area closest to Garfield border seems ok but for the most part it's a city of urban plight, people defend it by saying it has great Spanish food, but honestly you can find the same food in Dover without half the hassle.Good luck

^This. I used to only go there for a place called "American Fried Chicken" which had the best beef ribs. But ya, Spanish food is available in Dover with no hassle.

I don't know about Dover but Paterson has different types of Hispanic food including Dominican, Peruvian, Colombian, Mexican, as well as Italian, Jamaican, Turkish, Arab, and soul food.
Thanks for the additional input. I'm a middle aged white woman (if that makes a difference)living in fair lawn with no car so sometimes I look for things to do on Sunday since, you know, the blue laws... I saw that paterson had a mall (?) of some kind and thought it might be a place to check out. I'd be happy to go to the garden state mall instead, but that isn't open on Sunday
