The numbers to the right of the screen are correct, however, on the interactive map on the left, a bunch of the towns are incorrect. It looks like whoever made the map assigned the wrong numbers to the towns.
Maplewood got Millburn's numbers. Irvington got Livingston's numbers. Livingston got Maplewood's numbers. Newark got North Caldwell's numbers, etc, etc.
It seems the map is now fixed. Now that it is accurate, it seems pretty clear that generally, East Essex has much higher taxes than West Essex. Just out of curiosity, are you the one that made the map?
I assume the cities in the eastern part of the county have higher tax rates simply because property values are lower there.
That's what I figured, but some of those towns have pretty high property values. Glen Ridge, Montclair, even South Orange and Maplewood have a lot of pricey homes, no?

Yes, but I was looking specifically at Orange, East Orange, and Irvington that are in the 4-5% range.

Yes, the map does seem corrected now. No, I am not the one who created the map. I would not even know how to begin how to create a map like this!
I did see that there are more maps of Jersey county tax property rates -- Passaic, Camden, Monmouth -- every county is a little different. I only wish these individual maps were seen in a larger context of the entire state. What do you think?
It's incredible that Essex Fells has a tax rate of 1.977%, while Irvington's is 5.456%
It's pretty simple to come to a conclusion why the rates are higher in one town compared to the next. Less govt. services are needed in Essex Fells compared to Irvington.

Well, yes, there is that. But keep in mind, most of the Irvington school budget comes from the state. It is an abbot district. Even if the amount of services were equal, you would still have to charge the Irvington residents a higher percentage. The median home value in Irvington is $157K. In Essex Fells it is $875K. If you only charged Irvington residents 1.9% on $157K, they would not have enough money to run their government. Even without all the school aid we give them.
