I was wondering if it was possible to live in a safe part of Jersey City with a 71K salary. It would be me and my wife. No kids and no car. I've heard the best safest affordable areas are: Historic Downtown, The Heights, and Bayonne (although I would have to travel through Greenville on my way to work if I was on Bayonne). Is 71K enough to be comfortable here?

71k is about 50k after taxes and withholding ? That is about 4k a month ? Depends on how much you pay for rent. If your rent is 1500 or less, you can live pretty much paycheck to paycheck. Maybe save 200-300 a month.

Bayonne is not in Jersey City, that's a separate town. You can take the light rail if you live within walking distance of a light rail station.
Your budget is going to be really tough in Historic Downtown. Two or three ago, people would recommend the part closer to I78 (like I78 to maybe Monmouth or Coles) as having affordable older apartments (like $1500 for a small 1bd in a walkup). Haven't seen any in a long time.
You can def. do Heights in your budget, but you will need a car to get around or go shopping.
You can also do Journal Square on your budget. You don't need a car in JSQ. Older 1 bd apts in prewar buildings can be found for 1K or less if you're not picky.
It depends what your other expenses are. Its not just about paying rent. You have to consider utilities, food, entertainment and anything else you spend money on. Do you have student loans or any other debt? You need to sit down and figure out your budget.
I used to live in downtown JC in a 1200 dollar apartment on a 55k salary and I was able to live very comfortably. I had no debt and few expenses.
Yahh, I live on 46k a year, and pretty comfortable. With plenty of money to throw around, Drive a new car, spend like $200 a week on groceries, another $200 a week on eating out. I don't drink cheap alcohol, that's another $100 A week. you can add another person to this budget and still be comfortable.
If you do your budget right, you can be comfortable here.
Looking at a map of Jersey City draw a line along the route 78 as it heads to the Holland Tunnel. Live east of this line for the nicer safe parts of Jersey City. There are still nice spots outside of this area such as a couple towers like Beacon or Cast Iron Lofts.
The Journal Square area isn't bad and is developing quickly.
The only really "bad" sections are the southwest around Greenville.
If looking for apartments try Del Forno real estate since they seem to have a sign on every for sale or rent brownstone.
It would be tough. Does the wife work? If the wife works and earns a decent salary, it would be doable but $71K alone in the better parts...well, I wouldn't advise that.
Am I the only one that thinks that it's insane that you can't live on $71k? The national income wage is $46k. So sad the state that this State has become.

You are not the only one. I think you can certainly live in JC for 71k. However, it really depends on the lifestyle and other expenses.
