Not everyone would agree that CA is better than NJ. There's this general attitude that weather is superior in CA but it depends on where in CA and your preferences, because not everyone wants the year round niceness and overall lack of rain. I for one love the change in the seasons. I think I would be bored in a more monotonous climate like in southern CA where it doesn't really get cold and rarely snows (they get a dusting every so often and everyone forgets how to drive... like when it rains there too )

I have a friend who came to NYC for college from Orange County CA and overall loved it here. She did move back though because it was only college and all her family is in CA.

^This. Wife and I moved from NJ to ND 5 Years Ago, and we don't regret it 1 bit. No noise, no pollution, no attitudes, no traffic, can buy a huge house for $50K. If we want 24 Hour Casinos, we have Them, especially if we go to DEADWOOD, SD.
I do miss the food a bit, though we can find it if we really look. I do fly back to NJ occasionally to visit family, but other than that I'm so glad I left NJ (no offense anyone).

North Dakota? I sure as hell could never make that move happily. Too "middle of nowhere" for me compared to what I'm used to. I'm glad you're happy where you live, because I think everybody should be, but I don't think many people from NJ could tolerate a move from an urban, dense place like NJ with lots going on, lots within reach, and lots to do and move to a place like North Dakota. I think you may be in the minority there. Looking at a satellite map of North Dakota (I'm weird and I study maps to see what other places look like/are like ) gives me anxiety, I don't think I could ever live there happily. At least CA is more similar to NJ population and density wise, in its more popular to move areas (Southern CA close to the coast). Major cities, pro sports teams, tons of cultural and nature activities within reach, the beach, etc. I would classify the Dakotas as nice to visit (and I want to) but probably could never live there. I am glad you like it though. You must appreciate the more quiet, relaxed atmosphere I assume it has.

I LOVE North Dakota. Middle of nowhere is my preference. Love being able to go out and get the newspaper, wearing nothing but my drawers, and about the only neighbors that would see me are those that have 4 feet and legs, LOL. I have many friends from ND, and SD that are from NJ, but admittedly they are in urban areas like Rapid City SD, or Bismarck, or Fargo ND. But I personally find places like Fargo, Bismarck too crowded, so I wanted to get away from all that. Even when I was in NJ, I was in Hope NJ, Warren County, pretty sparsely populated. And in places like Fargo, there is a huge hipster music type scene, and foodies, and we do have malls, so it's not like the movie Fargo shows, LOL.
Yes, I Love it here. You should visit. And because of the oil boom, tons of people from different states have moved here. Our Williston ND Walmart Pays Highest in the country...Starting Wage of $20 due to oil boom.

Oil boom brings high-paying jobs to North Dakota - Sep. 28, 2011

And Check this out...a Vorhees NJ family that moved to Bismarck and started a NJ style pizzeria here. It's awesome too:

Nardello's Pizza - About Us

And we got Philly Ted's in Rapid City SD, started by a gentleman from Philly. ALMOST Pats and Ginos, key word ALMOST, LOL.
History and Photos | Philly Ted

And we have this:
Piesano's Pacchia | Rapid City, SD

But I won't even pretend like the food compares to NJ. To each their own of course! Let me Know if u ever visit this way! Make sure u see Mt Rushmore in SD!

I wouldn't really compare ND to CA, no offense. Also regarding the oil boom and the accompanying explosive job growth:

Williston, ND: Oil boomtown could see 20,000 layoffs - KTVQ.com | Q2 | Continuous News Coverage | Billings, MT

More job cuts expected for oil workers in 2016

And fyi Mount Rushmore is a 6hr drive from Willston. Kinda funny how the biggest tourist attraction in ND is in a different state, guess it works out for you though since you don't have to see any more people!

Um, wow, no need to be hostile. Mt Rushmore is the biggest tourist attraction in SD, not ND. Ours is probably Teddy Rooselvelt National Park, and Medora, although there are many others. Also, I don't live in Williston, so those driving distances don't apply to me. And in the West, a 500 mile drive is not a major undertaking, as we have 75-80 MPH limits.
I Know how far things are, so its not really "for my information". I am about 250 miles northwest of Rapid City SD, certainly not 6 Hours.
I was just giving an example from my experience, not comparing CA to ND. No reason to compare. I wouldn't personally choose to live in CA either, but obviously many do. 1 of my former co-workers in ND moved from Merced, CA. So, of course, to each their own.
I never Said I don't like to see ANY more people. Wow, I think all 50 states are nice in their unique way, and I never see the need to come on here and make personal attacks against anyone, but I guess it boosts your ego, so have at it, friend. You're doing wonders for the stereotype of NJ.

You probably sing "Green Acres is the place to be........" every day.

To each their own and great that you found your version of utopia, I feel that I'm in "Green Acres" here in SW NJ and dislike it so much that I dream of the stars of home in Northeastern NJ, or Central NJ in the NYC market if the area is right.

LOL, I actually don't sing that. But growing up in NY, and then living in NJ until 5 Years Ago, my dream was always to move to MT, ID, ND, SD, WY, AK, or such, and get away from it all. Finally I was able to realize that, and it feels great! But hey, different strokes! Thats why we have the greatest country in The World with 50 unique states, each with it's own qualities! Cheers!
I liked SW NJ, but actually lived in NW NJ for Years (Hope, NJ). I do have family in NY and NJ so I visit often. It's just a flight away, so no big deal for me.

Like I said, visiting those states is a dream of mine. I have a huge interest in the "wide open" spaces of the West/parts of the Midwest. But I know I couldn't live there. I can stick with visiting. But when I say I'm glad you like it, I really am. I do think people should be happy where they live and love it.

I'm glad you've found good food in ND that may even mimic NJ staples. I don't doubt other areas of the country can make good pizza, especially by transplants from this area, but I think you're more likely to find a lot of consistently good pizza in this area than anywhere else. Same with bagels, bread in general, Italian in general etc. But yeah, you can find it anywhere. I do plan on coming out to the Dakotas some day! I want to visit every state, it's been a goal of mine for a while.
