Well, you have to consider that most areas within the state are suburbs of one of those two cities. Within any rural parts of NJ, there really isn't any transit service. I mean, some routes pass through areas of nothingness (especially in southern NJ), but that's because there's no other way to get between the denser towns they're trying to serve.
In any case, I think the per trip costs might be a little on the high side (for instance, $2.35 for a 2-zone trip is a little high), but when you get a monthly pass, I think it's pretty reasonable. It would be nice if it was cheaper, but what can you do?
