I have Simplisafe, works quite good. Police showed up right away when I click on the silent alarm by accident. Full wireless system and cost a fraction the price of ADT. I got 2 window sensor, 3 motions, and other automation built in. The key is this system is modular, you can add many additions yourself cheaply and not more cost.

I was looking at some outdoor cameras with FLIR but I was not able to find an outdoor one that goes below negative 5 degrees. It gets colder than that in this hell in winter.

im getting closer to where this decision has to be made. how do they run the wires through a house? the house is pretty large and odd shaped. it seems like it would be very challenging to run the wires.

Wires can be run outdoors(though if specifically for security you may not want to do that). I ran ethernet to my second floor and they ran it outside the house. Very neat and easy. If they are run indoors it really depends on your house as to how easy/difficult it will be running them through the walls/ceiling.

thinking about this one: https://www.amazon.com/Reolink-4-Meg...Reolink+4mp+HD

i wonder if that 583.95 for installation is really what i could expect.

I put system in basement, drilled a hold from the inside to the outside, I went off a hole that was already there and went like 3 inches over just so I did not have to guess where the other side was.

I ran the wires on the outside, where the foundation and the house meet I ran under there, wire is not visible, then I ran it up the corners of the vinyl siding, you can push wire in the corners and run it up, you do not want to mount too high, just so it is out of reach for anyone on foot.

look at this system on amazon

https://www.amazon.com/4-MegaPixel-2...51J43CWSNZBB28

it has an option for expert installation for 789.29. it seems like expert installation costs would be affected by factors that may impact how easy it is to put the wiring. can i count on getting the cameras exactly where i want them with wires all concealed behind walls for that single price? one issue i see is people have cameras that are wired through the eaves of the home. that makes running the wires easier but now the cameras are too high to get a good picture of people. so i would want to make sure they arent too high.

I think they will mount the camera where you want based on that price. However, "Concealing cables in walls, attic or conduit (onsite inspection may result in additional costs)". Most manufacturers recommend a covered location for the cameras, hence the mounting on the eaves.
