I saw a video clip of bears wandering around an area. Do people ever pet the bears there if they aren't too large?

Nah, I should have mentioned a clip I saw was of a cub at the front door of a residence, although this was a different state, I think. I saw a couple of other clips of deer in people's houses. In one of those, the home owner was able to pet them.

Animals have personalities as different as people.

Then there is acclimation of individuals in some circumstances. the stories of people in bear country like Warren county are downright frightening in the sense that the close contact stories I've been told will lead to a death.

Bear are unpredictable and so are some humans. Stories about being engaged for 5 years, get married and behaviors you never saw come out.....same for 'friendly' bears.

Befriend a bear and that bear fearlessly walks up to a hunter during bear season and you signed his death warrant.

The state conficated a baby bear form someone in SJ and bought it by. We went to take photos for 'leave wildlife alone poster', Tried different scenarios. then palced the bear cub on the trunk of a straight as an arrow tulip poplar tree and it took off like a rocket straight up that tree. Didn't stuggle, seemed calm and suddenly zoom faster than you can blink....the great escape. If anything does happen it will be so fast it will freeze your brain, thus immobilizing any action you might have thought you would take in a bad bear situation.

Don't buy into all bears are friendly nonsense many groups are putting out. If a stay dog causes you concern, so should a bear.

I am in Essex county and there is no bears here. Have to drive west to Morris county to find bears. My general knowledge about bears and I know some bear jokes. Most times a dog will give you a notice before attaching a bear does not. It's a large predator that might decide to attack you at any moment. Feeding bears, if they get used to getting food near your house they will hang out near your house.

ok, so there is a hiking tour and the organizer says that every-one has to wear a wrist bell. As you move the bell rings and scares away the bears. Some-one asks what If they get a def bear. The response to which, you can easily tell if a bear is def by the presence of a wrist bell in it's feces.

Two yeats ago this week, a 22-year-old student was killed and snacked on by a bear in NJ. He had taken its picture just prior to it attacking him.

The Rutgers student who was on a group hike? They were warned by people coming down the trail about the bear and went up that way anyway because they wanted to see it. Sad but stupid. People often underestimate nature.

Yes, and I think it's an answer to the OP's question.

Morris County definitely has more bears than Essex County, but Essex County is half suburban and bordering Morris County, so Essex also has bears (and fox and coyotes). There used to be a lot of turkey buzzards in suburban Essex, as well. Not sure if those are still around in abundance.
