Default HMO help

Can anyone give me information on the different HMO's available in New Jersey? We will be moving to Elizabeth, and I would appreciate any advice in choosing a network.

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ is one of the most popular in NJ. I have an HMO through them and it's not terrible - just make sure you get a referral for everything from your PCP

I had Aetna three times through three different employers. I never had a problem with them. Ditto the above, always make sure you have your referral and precertifications in advance.

Just remember with ANY HMO...always to get a referral from your primary care physician before seeing any other doctors or having any tests done. I used to work for Aetna and if you don't have the proper referrals or requests for tests, they WILL NOT cover it.

Also, keep in mind, when something is denied...they aren't telling you that you can't have it done..they're just telling you that they're not going to pay for you to have it done...if you choose to go ahead, you are financially responsible. A lot of people don't realize that when they appeal denials for treatment or tests.
