Hi all,
Just a quick question regarding school cut-off dates...
We are currently in Brooklyn and my son has a later October birthday. As some of you know, NYC has the latest cut-off in the nation, so my son was forced to start kindergarten at 4. I was very unhappy about that, and my fears have only grown over the past 2 years. In looking ahead at his future, I cannot disadvantage him in this way.
We are considering a move to NJ if the schools there would permit him to repeat first grade. Does anyone know how the schools would handle this situation? Would he be able to register with the rest of his age cohorts (meaning he would do 1st grade again) or would they force him to enter 2nd since he's already completed 1st?
I don't think there's a hard cut-off date for most NJ towns as long as you can prove residency and have the child's current report cards for the school. I would call the school and find out, they would need a few proof of residency in order to gain attendance.
I would contact the board of education in the town(s) you are looking to purchase in. I know there are parents who have held their kids back before entering school for different reasons and it was allowed. I can't imagine a school district saying no as it seems it may be in the best interest of the child but it is always best to ask the questions of the people who will ultimately decide.

My brother-in-law was able to hold their daughter back, and her birthday is in August. They lived in Chatham at the time.
It might also depend on age. I've heard (sorry, nothing definitive to back it up) that if the child is in one of the early grades - kindergarten or first - that the schools are more likely to be flexible than if the child is in second.
Are his grades that bad that repeating first grade is really warranted?
It's probably not the grades, but that he would be younger than all the other kids in his classes. He would be a month younger than even the very youngest kids in his class. Sometimes that difference can be huge, both physically and emotionally, even while the kid can be just fine academically.

No, his grades are great and he just qualified for G&T, but he would be possibly a year and a half younger than some of the kids. We can't do that to him!
