My husband will be working at RWJ Medical Center, and we are looking to buy a home in Middlesex or Somerset county. Is it just a dream to look for a 2-3BR townhome/house for $250,000 or lower, in a safe area? (By safe I mean a place where a woman and baby could walk home at night). How far below list prices are homes currently selling at? Here (Baltimore), homes are staying on the market for months and months...is it the same in central NJ?

We found some homes listed around 260-280,000 in sayreville...what is this town like? We also found a few listings in neighborhoods in zip codes 08873 (somerset county), 08880 and 08805 (south bound brook bo), 07060 (north plainfield) and 08876 (Branchburg Twp).

Which county has cheaper property tax? We're not too worried about schools, as we are only planning on living in the area 3-4 years, and our daughter is only 4 months old.

Thank you, thank you for any help! It's been difficult planning a re-location (and buying our first home) with a new baby!

New Brunswick is very hit or miss. Overall New Brunswick is going through a revilization project at the current moment that has been happening for the last several years near the downtown restaurant area (George Street). Since there is such an active nightlife in this particular area, developers have come in hoping to take advantage of this. In your price range of $250,000, I would say you can probably find a home but you probably won't like the area. I know of a few condo/townhome complex that will allow you to get a newer type unit for a reasonable price but many areas are hit or miss. One must keep in mind that when you are looking in a lower price range, your neighbors can often reflect the price range, no matter what the location is. For you I would suggest looking into the following communities:

Fulton Square/Downwood Court
Brand new condo units
$250,000+ for a 2 bedroom 2 Bath unit
$290,000 +/- for a 3 bedroom 2 Bath unit
1200 Square Feet
Built in 2006

Hampton Club/Edpas Road
Probably the most affordable condos in New Brunswick & Close to Route 27
$200,000 to $250,000
Square footage Unknown
Built around 1990

Lawrence Street Townhomes
One of the only townhomes (more than one floor) available in the price range
Rarely offered for sale!
$240,000+/-
Square footage Unknown
Built around 1990

Hope this helps.

Oh and Sayreville is good. Just stay away from the Winding Woods.
