Driving an electric car in NJ (sales, 2014, how much)

Hello,

I'm thinking of getting a 100% electric car. Not a tesla. Probably the bolt. I'd be driving about 45 miles each way everyday between central jersey and south jersey. Going down the turnpike or 295. Also occasional trips up to north Jersey/nyc.

I'll plan on charging at home of course but in case I need to "fill up" what are the options like? How long to charge and how much is the cost? Any lines? (I read there are several Tesla-only charging stations I couldn't use).

How long/how much depends on your car how "low" it is, and how much you need. On the Road you want to find L3 Chargers, 20-30 minutes for most cars. But Stations is few and they have issue with reliability. You might show up at a L3 and it down, The other issue is there may be a line to use it.

Costs are a connect charge, then a cost per minute or KwH.

I fill up my car with gas when it gets down to 1/2 level. Just curious with an electric car if you get stuck in an hour or 2 traffic jam on the turnpike in 90 degree weather how long before it goes dead?

If you are stuck in traffic you are only using the AC, My Leaf on AC only uses about 2% draw of the battery per hour to run the AC, Radio.

Also most of the time EV car always start the day with a "Full" tank, as you top off from your charger overnight.

Good to know. My wife wants a Tesla and this is one of the concerns that I have. What is the estimated distance for you before a recharge? Thanks

My Leaf has about 80 mile range (2014) (The Range does go down as it ages).

I have a inhome charger so I can easily charge up when I park in the garage. I use it for around town driving, and in the local area, so Its rare for me to use public charging (I think I've used Public Chargers 5x in 5 years).

When I Get down below 70-80% "Full" I top it off overnight. Also figure in what my next day's driving activity is. If I'm Not going anywhere other then to grocery store or to schools I might get it go down to 50% But not that often as it does not hurt to keep it full. Takes all of 5 seconds to plug it in, and it charges on its own, for the next few hours.

Teslas have different ranges, I think the longest at this point is 300 miles. They have a very smart system, where the map is integrated with the battery level and they'll tell you where on your trip you should go recharge.

Regular commuting around New York you'll be fine. My brother has one and lives in Boston and the summer drove it down here before going out to Ohio and back in it. He doesn't bother charging up every night for his daily commute, he might do it once a week.

Before you go thinking about the money you will be saving by going electric the most expensive part of car ownership is depreciation. The two highest depreciating cars in the last 5 years was the Nissan Leaf and #2 was the Chevy Volt, considering the Bolt hasnt been out long enough to show its depreciation curve id assume it would also be up there. The couple of dollars you save a day really wont justify the expense imo.
