I live in the Pennsylvania suburbs of Philadelphia and don't drive. North Jersey, mainly Asbury Park, is my spot. I prefer North Jersey over South. However, if I'm looking for a day trip, I'll go to Atlantic City.
With COVID-19, my plans are being altered. I have friends in Asbury Park and they were telling me a lot of the events are cancelled. I was going to plan a trip to Asbury Park, but the hotel I want to stay at is booked until August (August is when they're allowed full occupancy again) and it's $250/night. Eeek. Now my friend might not meet up with me. He's very hot/cold, two times in the past two years, things came up and we couldn't meet. I love swimming and the beach, but I want to see my friend.
As much as I love Asbury Park and North Jersey, I might take three day trips to Atlantic City in July. Wouldn't have to pay for lodging, $20 roundtrip for the bus, I'll bring my own food. That's my day trip location. However, I'm not sure. What would you suggest? I'm on a budget, I'd like to go to the beach, and just have some relax time.
$250/night for a hotel is actually a steal compared to "normal" summers. Last summer I looked into getting a hotel room near the beach in Long Branch and it was around $500/night and I believe a 3-night minimum stay.
Many different possibilities,,, we haven't been to Seaside in a while but went this past weekend with kids,,, mostly just to walk the boardwalk which was packed with people and almost NO ONE had any masks, even the cops did not wear any. makes you think twice.
I'm paying off debt, so I was hoping to spend under $400 or $450. I'm thinking I might just go to Atlantic City every weekend for the day, and save up for Asbury Park next year when hopefully more things are open.
$500/night in Long Branch!? I stayed in an Air bnb there two years ago and it was $100/night. It was an okay neighbourhood, the family was pretty cool. I travel solo, so I don't mind Air bnb. The gay couple I stayed with last year in Neptune City was amazing! They were $113/night.

Will any events open this year in Jersey?
Yeah $500 is crazy, but you have to remember that beach season in NJ is only 3 months out of the year. So they need to make up for the other 9 months out of the year that nobody is booking rooms. I didn't think of Air BNB last year, but I would not be willing to share space with strangers. It would have to be a place where I would have the entire space for just me and my family.

That makes sense. When you do that with Air bnb, it can be just as expensive as a hotel. I'm single and have no kids, so I guess that's why shoestring trips can work for me.
I don't remember Tides ever being that expensive. It was cheaper in July, but it was all booked. August, the prices spiked. I've never been to the Jersey Shore in August, so it could be normal. Now, June was 1/3 of the price as July!
My parents are Cape May people. I still live with them and mom asked me why I didn't want to go to Cape May. We each have different preferences. I bet that would still be expensive. They went last week, stayed at a motel for $95/night, but it was June. I'm sure they change for July and August too.
If you want to see your friend so badly, why not stay with them?
He still lives with his parents in South Amboy. Even some of his friends that I met through him live in Asbury Park don't want to host me. I am beginning to think that mayhaps they are fairweather friends.

I want to try white house subs and i heard there's a good pho place in AC.
I don't understand why they don't fix AC up. Everything vegas does, AC could do. And they have a beach!
They really need to extend the coast line to AC to bypass the trip to philly from northern NJ.
Connect north and south and reunify and heal the state!
I'm gluten-free, so the Tony's Baloney's and AC Pizza may be out. However, pho is my go-to! I'll have to research it.
It's settled, I'll take four day trips to Atlantic City. An hour and a half by bus from Philadelphia, I can easily do that in a day. Asbury Park is about 3.5 hours each way by bus.

jess...Asbury Park is in no way, shape or form, North Jersey. There's always an argument as to what is North Jersey and what is South Jersey and if Central Jersey really even exists, lol, but I think everyone would agree that there are no beach towns in North Jersey. The ocean part of the coast doesn't begin until Sandy Hook, and you've got a whole lotta Jersey north of that. The northern part of New Jersey has the Hudson River as the border rather than the ocean.
But, you're from Philly and not Jersey so you can be forgiven for not knowing our geography!
The $20 roundtrip for the bus sounds like a deal as far as transportation goes. However, check further and see what is going on in Atlantic City. I'm just thinking that with the casinos closed, it might feel a bit deserted. I really don't know, though.
Day trips do sound like a more budget-friendly choice. If you can incorporate reading or listening to a podcast into the traveling part, the journey itself can be interesting.
