Does anyone know if the Tube Bar in Jersey City is still around? I came to know about it from the "Tube Bar Tapes" which were prank calls made in the mid to late '70s to the bar which was an old school old man's bar run by a guy named Red Deutsch. The calls were lated copied by the Simpsons when Bart would call Moe's Bar and ask for "Amanda Hugenkiss," "I.P. Freely," and "Ben Dover." Even Moe's character was inspired by Red, who had a voice like he gargled with broken glass every morning. Apparently the bar was near one of the entrances to the PATH, hence the name. I was just wondering if it was still there even though I'm sure it's changed hands a few times if its still standing.

Don't do this to me Badfish. We used to go in that bar 20 years ago with the load on. It was on the south side of the path station and next to 3 brothers pizzaria. Loaded with bompies and drunk. You name it they were there. I took the path to Newark to see the rangers/devils at the rock and I didn't see it there anymore. I wasn't looking and I didn't see it. I have to look tomorrow and maybe I'll stop in with Bart and have a cold one. It was and or is a bar where you don't drink out of the glasses if you know what I mean (filthy).

Dang you badfish..now I'm thinking about all those delicious Bar b que chickens in the Paramount Grocery across from the Tube bar..then a little down yonder the 5 Corners bakery...

Tube bar also had many many wall st types sipping their early am cocktails before they caught the train into NYC..that place would be knee deep at 8 in the morning

Over the years, the bar closed, and was replaced with a series of little delis and food stores. Earlier last year, the site was reduced to rubble in preparation for the redevelopment of that part of Journal Square.

Don't know if you are old enough to remember the "women's lib" controversy surrounding The Tube Bar.

Jersey City long had a law prohibiting unescorted women in bars. I think it was in the 1970's -- in the rush of women's liberation -- a group of women decided to sue and "liberate" the bars in Jersey City, so women could be served. Of course, they won the suit, the JC bars threw their doors open to women -- except for Red. He still refused to serve them! It created quite a "stir." LOL!

There are several sites commemorating the Red & the Tube Bar. The bar itself closed in 1980 and Red died in 1983.
