Be more specific on where you'll be working, where you want to live, etc...

You should also be prepared that you will not get anywhere near the amount of house (sq foot and features) that you are used to in Atlanta.

We made the opposite move last year. Let me know where you were in Atlanta and what you'd like to find thats similar in your new home in NJ and what you'd like to change, and maybe I can point you toward sompe towns. As said above though, be prepared to get around 1/3 of the house you had in Atlanta, and to pay 3x the property taxes......

You need to be more specific about location and requirements. Btw, I know of some people who are considering moving to Atlanta. Be warned that home prices in NJ are much higher and you won't get as much house for your money.

Thanks for your responses.

I am not from Atlanta. I am originally from NY so I am aware of the cost of living and also what you DON'T get for your money!

I am currently renting a home in Buckhead.

I will be working in NY.

It is myself and my two children so I'll need three bedrooms. I know nothing at all of New Jersey so any advice, comments are greatly appreciated!

How will you be traveling into NY? Bus? Train? Car? Are you working in Manhattan of in Brooklyn or the other boroughs? Finding a 3 br house in a safe area with good schools and convenient to NYC transportation for $300k is going to be a little tough, but it can be done. How much of a commute are you willing to endure? Can you take a house that needs some "TLC"??

I'll take the train/bus to NY. I'll be working in Manhattan.

I can do about an hour commute.

How tough do you think it'll be?

You can look down in Middlesex County, which is the area we moved from last year. We were in Iselin, and you can get a 50 y/o 1,000 sf 3 br/1ba cape cod there for around $300k. You have the opportunity then to use the buses into the city, or take the train from Metropark (which would be my choice if I were you). The schools are good, there's plenty of shopping in the area, and it's a safe place to live- nothing really major ever happens there that I can recall.

Bob - I didn't know you moved from Iselin. Yes, it is a nice little town, plus you get the added excitement of feeling like you're visiting "India" when you drive around town! Namaste, NY2ATL2NJ!
