I do think Highland Park is the best pick for Jews. They have an eruv and the Dunkin Donuts there is kosher.
I don't think you can use any area other than Edison/Iselin for Indians/South Asians.
Fort Lee/Palisades Park you could use for Asians, but it's more of a small heavily populated pocket.
I live in Tenafly and could certainly make an argument it works for “Jews” here. Obviously Lakewood as well. Fair Lawn, Englewood, Teaneck, Livingston, Millburn, Marlboro, so many…
Indians could also be in the West Windsor/Robbinsville area, Plainsboro, South Brunswick, Parsippany, Jersey City…but again I think the point here is that the areas like Highland Park, Edison, and Iselin really have no other distinguishing feature besides the ethnic population.
Much of eastern Bergen County could indeed be Asians, more specifically Koreans. Prior to moving to Tenafly, I lived in Fort Lee near Palisades Park. Closter, Englewood Cliffs, Leonia…all top 10 municipalities in the bounties States by Korean percentage of population are in eastern Bergen County. Lots here in Tenafly as well. But to do something to include the western half which is less Korean, I like the idea of something with the blue laws. Lots of Chinese also live in Edison and Jersey City along with the Indian populations.
Truth is so much of New Jersey is so heavily diverse that it does not do the state justice to single out specific areas for their ethnic and religious populations.
Maplewood, South Orange, West Orange, Montclair I would call ... suburbanized NYC professionals.
Paterson is poor, but quite diverse. And the outskirts are more middle class.
Bergen County is more flashy wealth. Morris County is more 'low key' wealth.
Also, Cape May need it's own designation.
While I don't disagree, it needs to be funny for the map to work though. Maybe they could riff on RHONJ for Bergen Country. I dunno, just spitballing here.
I saw one for New England a while back that was really funny (and true, from a native), but can't remember when/where.
I wouldn't consider Paterson diverse. Its pretty homogenous of the type of population where you would lock your doors when going through.
Paterson is very ethnically diverse. Black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern/Arab/Turkish/Lebanese. There are significant Bangladeshi, Caribbean, Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Peruvian communities. Not many non-Hispanic whites or “Asians”, but it is most definitely not a homogenous city.
I cannot speak as to the other parts, but I have been to the Middle Eastern part of town a handful of times and have had no worries there. One time, there was a non-violent homeless person who came into a restaurant to get a good handout, but that was it. It’s really worth going there for restaurants and shopping. Overall not a huge area of the city, but it’s good.
