I thought this would be a neat thread for people looking to live in the tri state area and commute to NYC.

It is hard to look on a map and see what a commute is like so I was hoping some of you would chime in so others can use this thread as a reference when researching some of these towns. Methods of trans available, average times and if you have a ballpark figure for monthly costs that would be awesome. If you want to throw in the average cost of a newer 3 bd 1 bath home that would be nice as well.

Have a good day & TY!

Jersey City the neighborhood of Paulus Hook is an 8 minute ferry ride to either Battery Park or Wall St. There is a ferry to West 34th also.

The PATH train is a 5 min commute to WTC and can be taken to 34th and Broadway.

If its by car, then a $6 charge to use the Holland tunnel to get to Manhattan, but the return is free.

The PATH is $1.50 and the ferry starts at $4.00

Most if not all the 3 bedroom condos have 2 baths and will set you back around $3000+ per month
The neighborhoods of Van Vorst Park and Hamilton Park will set you back around $2500+ per month (mainly brown stone walk ups)

There are cheaper neighborhoods with great commutes to NY, but crime can and will be an issue.

As the crow flies, 23 miles.
By the bus or train, 45 min-1 hour.

Elizabeth, 16 miles. It takes me 32 mins on NJ transit to Penn Station NY. North Elizabeth station, add on about 5 mins to get to the train station, 10 mins for the midtown station from where I am. So between 37-42 mins total.

To downtown: 5-10 mins to the station, 10 mins to Newark, 25 mins on PATH to WTC. So 40-45 mins.

(of course you should always leave 15 mins extra for possible delays, etc..)

Houses: I know a beat up 4 bed is about 400 in a nice area. around 650 for something fixed up.
