What memories! There were 2 JJ Rockers (the one on 35 turned into a go-go bar) and I don't know what happened to the other. I have one memory, in particular, about the one in Scotch Plains. After a bachelorette party in 1996 without transportation plans (duh!).... we wound up at a payphone across the street after the place closed down for the night... and everyone (including the employees) left for the night! Kind of scary... being in that area all alone at that hour (well, there were a few of us)! I think the police might have driven us home to Edison. Kind of foggy... can't remember too clearly!
IIRC they had 3 locations: Scotch Plains, Amboy/RT35, and Seaside Heights. But I only been to Scotch Plains. People used to come from all over (Highstown, Bergenfield, P-Burg) to go to Scotch Plains.
I went mostly to the one in South Amboy. Once in a great while we'd venture up to Scotch Plains. I remember Smitty as well, wonder what ever happened to him.
In fact, I met my husband at the Rockers in South Amboy, back when we were wee young'uns. I haven't seen or heard from anyone in the groups of people we used to go there with, although I think I saw one of the bartenders, Pete, at a Pathmark years ago.
They should do a JJ Rockers "reunion" & turn the bar back into Rockers for a night.
I liked JJ rockers in Scotch Plains. Rock music from a dj in one room and club music from another dj in the other room. The cover was 3 or 5 dollars. Good crowds on Friday and Sat. night. In the fall of 1995 it changed to Amnesia, more like club music. About 1997 there was a shooting outside of Amnesia, soon it was closed. They are building an auto parts store at that location now.

There is a JJ Rockers TV commercial, possibly from the 1980's on you tube now (7/09).
