What would be the best area where I could find an old-town style single family home in Northern NJ with both front & back lawns in a decent area where the kids can play out on the street & low crime yet still relatively close to NYC?

Also, does $350K buy anything decent anywhere in NJ nowadays?

Since you already took a job in Hackensack you should have asked for a nice home in that area. A town commutable. Hackensack is not very nice. Lodi is not real nice either. Not dumpy but maybe not what your looking for with 2 small kids.

In and around Fairly Dickenson College is all kinda nice and in your price range. Maywood might be worth your look. These should be under a half hour commute. Saddle Brook is real nice but maybe out of your range.

Good luck in your move.
