This sounds like a good investment to also improve the quality of life for commuters and encourage visitors into nj. Some trains into nyc are over packed during rush hour.

The Turnpike Authority is advancing a project to widen sections of both roads. The
Turnpike will be widened to 12 lanes between Exits 9 and 6 (work is scheduled begin before the end of the year and be completed by 2013), and there's a Parkway widening project between Exits 80 and 30, somewhere in the planning/design stages, but I'm not totally sure of its status.

as far as i'm concerned, it's about time this project moved forward. the politicos and transit agencies have been talking about this forever, so hopefully there are no significant delays and this tunnel can be completed by the mid-2010s.

Yep, that's one of the big benefits. It will make the commute more doable for Bergen, Passaic, Rockland and Orange county commuters by giving them a one-seat ride into Manhattan.
This project also doubles the train capacity under the Hudson. As someone who used to sit on a train parked in the Meadowlands stuck in "train traffic," the extra capacity will reduce travel delays, induce more demand for commuter traffic and the kinds of
transit-oriented (re)development that towns along the rail system have thrived on in recent years. This is a very good thing for New Jersey indeed. Rail demand is growing, and there are all kinds of opportunities to create a truly regional commuter rail network. BUT, there is a huge capacity constraint at the tunnel. Eliminate that huge bottleneck and the system works much better.

A new station will be constructed adjacent to Penn Station to accommodate more trains and process them faster. There will be more stairways, escalators, etc. than at Penn, to get passengers out of the trains and off the platforms faster.
