New Jersey hopes to begin work on a new commuter-rail tunnel under the Hudson River within six months, the state's new transportation chief said.

The tunnel, complementing an existing one between New Jersey and New York City, is one of 15 transportation programs that have been accelerated in the coming year under Corzine's plan. The passage under the Hudson would provide room for two new tracks for NJ Transit trains.
Dilts said the state's share will come to $3 billion; part of that would come from an anticipated federal stimulus package proposed by President-elect Barack Obama, he said. In all, the new tunnel will cost $8.7 billion, he said.
How will they pay for this? By increasing taxes and tolls, thats how! And don't forget, the costs will double b/c the project will take longer than expected b/c of "delays" and funds mysteriously vanishing.
Finally, some good development news. It feels like NYC has been sleepwalking for the past few decades, even before 9/11, while its main competitors (Hong Kong for example) have been moving at 100x the speed!
The southern Parkway and Turnpike lanes could use widening, Sunday they become pretty slow, or if there's a little accident it holds up everyone. I wonder where this Hudson passage would be, is it for cars to? it would make hudson county lessed jammed up for drivers, sucks driving there. This sounds like a good investment to also improve the quality of life for commuters and encourage visitors into nj. Some trains into nyc are over packed during rush hour.
You don't think this is the kind of project that has historically shown tremendous ROI? It's not like we're spending money to build a botanical garden or buy our teachers a better health plan.
They should just expand the NJtransit trains in Northern NJ, and connect it to the Path that goes to Penn Station, or build another connection on the GWB, it would be cheaper
and build maybe four or five express and local lines through the Jersey shore
anybody in Central not close to the shore will just have to drive or busride to a shore station
Anyone in south jersey will have to drive to Philly and take an amtrak
it will. bergen and passaic county rail commuters will no longer have to switch trains in secaucus or hoboken to get to midtown manhattan. instead, they'll be able to enjoy a one-seat ride from their hometowns to penn station.
as far as i'm concerned, it's about time this project moved forward. the politicos and transit agencies have been talking about this forever, so hopefully there are no significant delays and this tunnel can be completed by the mid-2010s.

Sorry, but this is a multi-billion dollar project and very little of it is being paid by NYC.
