My husband and I will be moving back to Jersey after being in Florida for the last 15 years. I know you probably think we're crazy, but my kids moved back to Jersey and honestly, I don't care for Florida. We're looking for something that probably doesn't exist. An urban setting, close to NY and beach, with restaurants and shops within walking distance. We want to buy a condo or townhouse as it's just the two of us. Also close to a good hospital. I'm from So. Jersey and do not want to move anywhere south of Monmouth County. Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated, then on my next trip up, I can check out your suggested areas. Thanks!

Tahit's suggestion is a good one. I take from your username that you are a nurse. Riverview hospital is in Red Bank. Red Bank is very walkable. It Has loads of really nice restaurants; Broad Street has great shops and the train into the city would prolly be (my guess) about an hour and change.
There are loads of condos, townhouses, flats, etc.... BUT...
Ah ha....ya see? I agree with you here. My sister lives there. They have one of the best downtown walking shopping districts I can think of. What I like about it is there is a lot of Hippy funky not run of the mill cafes and bistros. A great down town water front park, several marinas, a top rated hospital and great crabbing and fishing.
So to the OP, research Red Bank. It just may match what your looking for.

Sorry Shanny I answered Tahiti before I read your post. I pretty much said what you did.
I dont feel it is that over the top expensive compared to like maybe Holmdel but yea it's up there.
But compared to other areas that provide all of the features that the OP is looking for- and are safe- Red Bank could be considered a bargain. While not really "urban" compared to places like Jersey City or Hoboken (which would be much more expensive anyway), it's similar in its urban-ity (is that a word? lol) to places like Westfield which would be at least as expensive and wouldn't have the access to the beach that Red Bank has.

OP, nobody here thinks you're crazy...the only thing Florida is good for is decent weather during the winter. After that, it's just weird people and Waffle Houses....cultural wasteland if you ask me
How close to the beach do you need to be? Hoboken and Downtown Jersey City are EXTREMELY walkable cities (do not need a car at all, in fact). Both have charming historic brownstone neighborhoods on tree lined streets, tons of great restaurants (minimal amount of chains/franchises...yuck), and bars as well as cultural attractions such as museums and galleries. Both are only about an hour away from shore towns such as Pt. Pleasant and Manasquan, and are extremely convenient to Manhattan (roughly 10 minute Path ride to the West Village).
