BTW. OH taxes clothes NJ doesnt.

Lets use a typical house. My In laws.

My BIL house 180K. 1900 SF nice 1960s ranch plus basement. 2008 taxes are $3800. NICE house I might add with a NICE lot with a eat in kitchen you can toss a football along. No granite or anything but nice. They bought it as a light fixer that had (and still has) "great bones". Its straight, level, and well laid out.

Going to GSMLS I find this is a ~290K house in Stanhope and a 350K house in Rockaway. Taxes are ~$6500 for Stanhope and ~$7000 for Rockaway.

Looking at the tax tables on equivalent incomes I find Ohio state ~1-2% lower but loses the advantage with city tax and ends up lets say $1-2% higher. Never mind that CCA and RITA forms (local income tax) were written by Satan himself.

Where Ohio wins clearly is the mortgage itself (less property tax) is MUCH lower in OH... Then again this is slowly closing. But, for now, try ~$600 to $900 a month less.

PS. Satan called. He said dont even think of blaming RITA and CCA forms on him.

Ohio is bad for taxes, that's true. But every analysis I've seen has New Jersey not looking so hot either, and in some cases, worse than Ohio. I think both states have found different ways of fleecing their citizens.

Kinda makes you wonder why the citizens keep voting the incumbants back into office ?
