IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU CONSIDER A NICE/DECENT AREA.
I'm pretty sure 751 MLK Blvd. is between Spruce St. & Muhamed Ali Ave. I'm a native Newarker, been here 36 years. That area has always been and still is a gang controlled drug area. I'm not one of those people who bashes Newark and says there is no hope for the city. However, that area is extremely dangerous. There is a building, I don't know if it's 751 but it's close by, and it looks like a fortress with all kinds of fences around it. That was the only way to keep the heroin dealers out. I don't know if it was in the papers but there was a shooting last month on MLK & Spruce. If any of this concerns you: AVOID THAT AREA. However, if you are just looking for an easy commute into NYC it's convenient in that respect.
your best bet is jersey city but certain parts like pavonia...15 min to nyc via train..I know someone who moved out of state that's looking to rent her apt out pm me if yu are interested
If this is a decent place/ area, do you think it would be a good choice if I were working in NYC?
In my opinion, no.
Newark has some very rough areas. There are a few neighborhoods that are less dangerous (that's not one of them). You should be familiar with them before getting a place there.
If you want a cheap rental where you can commute on the PATH, I'd recommend Harrison or Jersey City near Journal Square.
Can anyone give me a update on this area? I want to move from NYC to NJ.
I lived here for 18 months right by Central ave, there was 6 homicides within a stones throw on the street itself which I was aware of, house and car breakins are a routine occurrence. The bloods are based in that area and teens and drug addicts will rob you. Just stay away.
What’s your price range? You can find decent apartments in the Ironbound close to penn station.
