I am living in Belleville, NJ. I live this apartment since 2001. My rent was 800 and I am paying 920 now. When i moved in 2001, they had installed brand new carpet worth $785.
Last year in 2008, I burnt my Carpet about a diameter of less than 1-feet, I put the hot pot on floor (carpet) and it damaged the carpet.
The carpet is already 8 years old, and looks very dirty at the moment. I assume the original value of the carpet has been depreciated for 8 years as of now.
Now that my lease is up in August 2009, I am moving out and my landlord is asking me to replace the carpet. (which would cost me $900)
My question is: How often do they have to replace the carpet?
And if they are not responsible for replacing as a part of maintenance, should i pay the full amount of the carpet or the depreciation of it as they have to replace it after certain time anyway?
I am a single woman and don't know much about such rules. Any help would be much appreciated.
