What "tax records online" are you looking at? Property records are a matter of public record, I don't think anyone can make the information confidential. Obviously, sometimes local govts have problems with their files etc., but if you're looking for particular data that seems to be missing I've had success in the past simply making a request to the county clerk of records and they have always tracked down the information.

i'm talking about the nj property records database:
NJ Tax Records Search
there are some homes where you can't see the sale price information, and not because it's from too long ago. why is that? how did they make the info confidential?

Maybe you could show us and example. The only ones I have ever seen are listed as family sale or transfer and bank repos. Those would be listed for $1.00. SR1A's are suppose to list all the transaction regardless of who it is between and for the amount, there are specific codes that are used to identify the type of sale.

You can't make it private- it's public record information. The fact that it's not listed in some listings doesn't mean it's being kept confidential- it only means that they didn't input the info into the listing.

No database is perfect, so it's probably a case of missing data, or if it's very recent the data might not have been added to the system yet.
What property are you looking at? There are probably a number of different sources where you could look for the information.

You can't. And what is even better...public records show any mortgage you take out or re-fi. The amount and the interest rate.

Just like Bob stated, this information will always be public and can not be made private. No matter what a website says, someone can still go to the tax office in the town and get the information rather easily.
