My family is looking to relocate from Philadelphia to the Mays Landing/Egg Harbor area. I'm in my late 20's, my husband is in his early 30's, and we have a 2 year old.

I've driven around the area, and it looks nice, but I was wondering what it's like to live there. How are the schools? The people?

Anything you can share would be great!

Don't know much, but they are nice areas. One problem for both is Shore Traffic.

Well, Mays Landing and EHT are both inland, so "shore traffic" isn't such a big deal unless you're on the Parkway. And even then, it's just Friday night and Saturday morning.

If you're looking for a wonderful suburban town in the area, check into Linwood. Great community, good schools. I worked there and know a lot of people who live there and love it. Also, check into Northfield and Somers Point. They're both great towns as well.

I don't know what your talking about with the Parkway (BTW until I went to college in North Jersey, i did not really know anything about), but people from Philly and South Jersey get to the shore by going through Mays Landing and EHT on Rt. 40 and 322.

Weymouth Rd., Jackson, Piney Hollow, Moss Mill, Cologne Ave, there are a lot of other roads. Many places in S Jersey have extra traffic on weekends. You work around it.

Very true, the only problem is when people trying to find a short cut going down your road, constantly. At my cousins live on a dead end off of English Creek Ave in EHT and during the summer cars constantly go down his road thinking it's some kind of short curt or something. We really don't understand it. But overall, you should be able to work around the traffic. I'm just pointing out 40 and 322 specifically because most of those roads you listed lead to 40/322. If you have children are you sending them to public or private school?

What he said... (I'd rep you but I can't -- have to spread it around some according to the forum master.)

Also, most Philly traffic takes the AC Expressway. Traffic on local inland roads is usually not that bad during the summer. Traffic usually light in the off-season.

Son just bought a house in EHT. Can't believe what he got for the money!

Ocean County gets jammed up in the summer too, obviously, but it's nowhere near the point where it would make me want to move or prevent me from living here. Plus during the week it's fine anyway. It's mainly Friday night, Saturday morning and then the reverse on Sunday night.

Hope both of you have jobs lined up already. I found it impossible to find a good professional job in government here. Thank God we're moving in about a year. Unless you want to work in the casinos, or in the medical field. Also, if you are a teacher, there seems to be plenty of opportunities there too. Property taxes here are way too high for middle-class folks such as myself.

Now, the plus side. Great, mild weather. Friendly people. Beautiful natural places to go to, country drives, day trips, etc. Very laid back compared to North Jersey. If you live in South Jersey you are also extremely well-positioned as far as travelling- you are a couple of hours from NYC, an hour from Philadelphia, near East Coast cities, etc. We live in Mays Landing, and do enjoy this area, nice friendly people, very safe. Also, you're very centrally located to plenty of shopping- Target,
Wal-Mart, Hamilton Mall, etc. No shortage of shopping places at all here.

If you have jobs lined up or are in a field where they have jobs here, then this would be a great place to live, especially if you love the water and the beach lifestyle. We're not crazy about beaches, so we find there's not a lot to do here, especially in the colder months, and frankly it's lacking in cultural activities.

I myself have had a horrific time finding a job here, and have been pretty miserable because of it. Our quality of life has suffered, and we're moving somewhere where there are better job opportunities.

It really depends on what you are looking for, this may be a great place for one family to live, terrible for another. Good Luck!
