If you want something rewarding that you will remember, consider volunteering at a local homeless shelter; they often need help with preparing meals for the holidays (or any other day, of course). Or maybe your church or other orgnaization makes deliveries to home-bound elderly in the area.

You took the words out of my mouth!

My family and I volunteer our time at a homeless shelter in Newark on Christmas morning before we exchange gifts. We bring cookies, food, clothes that we do not need anymore, some small gifts for homeless children, and enjoy a few hours of conversation with some of the residents. It really turns the day into a spiritual experience; and I am not a religious person.
