I will be starting a job in Edison soon. Right now I am on the Jersey Shore about 1hr south. I would like to begin "looking" to make a move.
We are looking for somthing north or west of Edison. Looking for a small town location, with single family houses and good school system. I am willing to travel up to 45 minutes.
Why move..unless you hate where you are now. A hour commute is nothing compared to what most do.
I'm in Toms River and drive everyday to my job at port Elizabeth..$$$ is there thats why I do it of course! Average time is 1.5 hours for me.
A few smaller towns with good schools and a quick commute to Edison are Spotswood, Milltown, and Metuchen. Out of all three, Metuchen has more of a downtown, but expect higher prices as well due to the train station.
Piscataway is not that far from Edison .. Nice big Suburb great school its only about 15 to 20 minutes from Edison I grew up in Piscataway and a lot of my friends were from Edison..
Everybody knows that NJ is the most populated state per sq mile than any other state. This means commuting will take longer than from where you previously lived. In my opinion anything more than 25 miles from where you work is at least a 45-60 minute commute. If I was to move to NJ from any other state I would get a map and draw a 50 mile diameter circle centered on my workplace and fine a place to live inside that circle. There are great towns with good schools within 25 miles from any workplace.
Here is my theory; when you are born you are given a limited number of heartbeats. Do you want to use up those heartbeats commuting to work or playing with your kids, grand kids?

Totally agree
but
I am not sure that relocating for a job these days makes a lot of sense given the insecurity of jobs.
I use myself as an example.
I moved to NJ in 2000. I have lived in my current apartment for 8 years. I have been laid off 4 times during these 8 years. One of my jobs took me as far north as Whippany and another of my jobs took me as far south as Moorestown.
