I think it's great news. Hopefully the reduction in murders will continue. Part of me thinks this is due to property values increasing. You could see this phenomenon occur in NYC during the late 80s-early 90s, in Manhattan. Crime began to go down, because the level of citizenry went up. Perhaps this is occurring in Newark. The bad news is that the bad apples merely re-locate somewhere else, ususally on the periphery. East Orange, Irvington are likely to see their murder rates increase.
The same thing happened here, in Albuquerque, the murder rate and violent crime rate has been dropping, however, smaller towns with less expensive living conditions in rural areas have witnessed crime spikes over the same period of time.
Most likely there was a few murders in that month..they just don't know it yet..ask how many on the missing persons list for that month in Newark...no doubt a few are dead!
I don't believe it. There are an average of 6.4 murders a month based on 2009 stats. Maybe its a trick by Corey Booker to get more investments in Newark lol. He said he will do anything in his power to make it a great city again. All those sirens u hear must be paying off.
On the contrary I heard there are major changes in the planets going on. I'm not a astro freak but I've witnessed a lot of positive change in the last month.
I guess this a good thing. I sure hope there isn't a DB out there somewhere that they haven't discovered yet. It would ruin the celebration and all.

10 since the start of the year would be a huge drop in the homicide rate -- about 50% less than previous years. The city has gotten better the last few years, though still has some way to go (see the city-data crime index for newark). Would be a big win for Booker if those numbers held up by the end of the year.

I could see Irvington's crime going up, but East Orange's seems to have gone down. At least that's what this website says. if you look at the crime stats for the past few years, they've made tremendous drops in crime. I admit it's not quite at the level where it's a city I personally would live, but still, it's progressed. It's unfortunate that crime got so out of control there in the first place, because there's actually some nice architecture there like you see in neighboring South Orange.
As for Newark, kudos to them. They started off 2008 by going almost seven weeks straight without a homicide, and the mayor seems hell-bent on cleaning up that city. Nice to see they're doing what they can to erase their tawdry image. They've also made a quantum leap in the past decade, I hope in continues.
