I've planned a trip for this coming fall to NM, and although I don't speed much I do drive a decently fast car that loves open roads so I decided to look up the speedtrap info on NM. I read some pretty nasty stories online on various websites that talk about how shady the NM State police and Najavo PD can be along Interestate 40 and other highways.. stories about people being pulled over while going the speedlimit and being ticketed for going over. etc etc. Is it that bad? Tell me what you've experienced. I pretty much plan on just going the speedlimit for the most part, but I plan on using my Valentine 1 and CB radio for extra measures.
Need not worry if you obey the speed laws. I drive I-40 to Abq on occassion and although I only go about 68-70 as that gives me opimum milage, other cars zip by at a much faster speed. There are some roads around NM like 117 south of Grants that have some straight areas that people go way too fast.
Also in the fall depending on when and where you drive you could encounter icy spots to don't push it.

Dont ya know that every person who gets pulled over in the poor State of New Mexico was driving the speed limit. Its just this hick State picking on out of towners ...
Be very careful driving Highway 4 through the Jemez Mountains. The speed limit drops to 20 and below through the communities (with good reason) and the state, county and tribal LEO's are VERY strict about enforcing it.
I've been warned to take it easy going though the Mescalero Apache rez going from Ruidoso to Cloudcroft. The NDN cops don't fool around.
That was true many years ago, but I don't see ANY enforcement in the past 14 years that I've been living in the area full time. Perhaps because they don't want to rile the tourists who might not stop at their two casinos (Inn of Mtn Gods and travel center on US-70) if ticketed. The speed limit through the town of Mescalero is lower than the general speed limit of 55 on the rest of the highway, but I've not seen anyone pulled over there either, though MOST of the vehicles are over the speed limits in all cases. I usually drive it at 65 in the 55 mph areas and frequently get passed.
