I'd be interested to know, after 42 yrs of working the R.R in other parts of the country we may land in the area in retirement.
I've seen a few push / pull operations while visiting (Engines on both the front & back of the Train) so I expect there is a change(s) of direction (unless somewhere on the trip there is a steep grade and that is the reason) that some trains take out on what I believe to be called the Carrizozo Division.
If it helps any, UP uses automated dispatching that tends to clump trains together. So you might have periods of peace and quiet alternating with a lot of trains right after each other. And this could be at any hour, so it could be that trains run constantly from 1-4 AM and not the rest of the day.
That's generally speaking, each terminal has a rough schedule of when certain trains depart and then there are extras on top of that.
Also, the newer federal work rules specify limited aggregate hours per week and more off hours for crews, so one day a week it might get quieter, you can tell when they've exhausted the list of rested crew for a while. But right after that they might run a few right away to catch up.
So, the answer is you will never be able to tell when or how many except for one thing; they will run more when you really need sleep or quiet.
If it's any help also, I live around 16th and Florida Ave. in Alamogordo and when the trains are running I don't hear them very loudly. I like the sounds of trains so that's not a problem with me.
I once lived in a house trailer located about 75 feet from an moderately active freight railroad line. The empty gravel cars sounded like they were in the living room. When we were awake we just stopped talking. When asleep we stayed asleep. People can adapt to most anything.
