NMDOT raising speed limit along stretch of Highway 285

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) - The New Mexico Department of Transportation is upping the speed limit on a busy southern New Mexico highway. The limit is changing to 75 mph along the roughly 100 mile stretch of Highway 285 between Roswell and Vaughn.
DOT officials say the increase is partly based on something called the "85th Percentile Rule," which states a reasonable speed limit is one that 85 percent of drivers are already following.
They also considered factors like crash data and roadway configurations.
Beginning in January, the speed along a section of U.S. 285 between Roswell and Vaughn will be increased to 75 mph, according to a press release from the New Mexico Department of Transportation.
New signs for the area are being prepared and will be installed on northbound and southbound lanes between mile marker 128 and mile marker 200.
Excellent news. Outside city limits in my opinion the speed limit should be raised to 75 on every major non Interstate highway, where the speed limit is already 75.

The logic for 75 is generally there are no ways on/off a thoroughfare where vehicles might merge or exit unsafely. Interstates (at least those built in the past 50 years) work with that logic pretty well.
285 S.E. of Vaughn, while not technically an interstate, does have some access roads, esp. on the Chaves county side, so that makes me a little nervous, but this is a win for everybody except members of the speed ticket-industrial complex in Guadalupe, De Baca, Lincoln?, and Chaves counties.
(You know, cops and judges who earn their living ticketing people driving 5-10 over)
Excellent news. This stretch can be quite a drag, particularly northbound for some reason. Passing is very difficult on that stretch. Here's to hoping all the pass-ees speed up accordingly so there's not as much call for passing at all.

Good point! I was through there a year ago last October and for the first time in I don't know how long I saw the highway patrol doing radar at the rest area, which is about 40 miles MOL north of Roswell. One thing about the road, thankfully it was 4 laned years ago.
