I will be spending a week in T or C Thanksgiving week and I'm staying in a motel that doesn't offer wi-fi or any other kind of internet access. Are there any internet cafes in town? Tried looking through the T or C online yellow pages and couldn't come up with anything.

Ok, let me think:
--City Library, of course, daytime hours
--Denny's
--Bella Luca: new, trendy restaurant, open AM for coffee & WiFi, not sure if you can use it at dinner
--new 'coffee patio' just opened, WiFi, -don't know name or hours, (sorry, you'll find it--if it's still open)
Riverbend Hot Springs, if you're staying there, I guess
Not much else that I know of.... ?

It really frustrates me too, especially not being a morning person. I wish they had something afternoons and eves, other than Dennys. Business hours here seem limited, or hit and miss, or a few days a week.
No Starbucks, or any 'coffeehouse'... no Walgreens, if that tells ya anything.

There are not any real internet cafes in T or C at this time. As the other
poster mentioned there are some places where you can pick up WI-FI
but they are from other sources. I was with a person the other day
in McDonalds and she was able to pick up a signal if she was sitting at
the right table. Why not just stay at one of the motels that offer
the internet? I would assume that they cost more than the budget motels.
I'll ask around and see if there is anything that I have missed but I do not
think so as I hear a lot of wi-fi people griping about it.

Good Luck

Why would you want Wi-Fi if you were in T or C? Find a hot spring and relax. The internet will get along fine without you for a few days and you will feel a lot better.

Greg, You did hear him say he's going to TrC, right? For a week...?

Designer! Was just thinking about you, reading some old, old TrC thread from early 07. Where have you been, or is it just me? Are you still in TrC, and weren't you planning on moving to Cruces?

Hi Anomoly,

I've been traveling a lot in the past few months and I was thinking seriously
of moving to Las Cruces but I have decided that I want to be a lot closer
to a larger city but still live in a smaller town. I might be going over to
Payson, AZ this weekend but another friend down in Green Valley is trying
to talk me into looking over his way first. Sort of hot to be going to southern
AZ this time of the year especially if I were to ride my motorcycle which
gets 55 to 62 mpg on gas. It does seem that I meet people who love it here
or just flat hate it and with the fuel costs going up several of my neighbors
have put their houses on the market to move to better shopping and other
things. I'm pretty sure I don't want to be in T or C if gas gets to $5 or more
per gallon but so far I havn't found the place where I'm ready to load up
the ole U haul truck. By the way there is one guy I know that was opening
up a wi-fi coffee shop but I'm not so sure that he isn't having second thoughts.

Thanks so much to everyone for replying. I have previously stayed at the Comfort Inn (think that's the one next to the McDonalds???) and they had wi-fi. I was only in T or C for a day and a half so I didn't get to see much except the Sierra Grande spa facility and Ducketts', which was closed that day. I fell in love with New Mexico and in particular the hot springs and have dreamed of returning for more than two years now. I've read every post on this forum with T or C in the post and some have angered me and others made me laugh. My impression of T or C is that it's a funky little town and like all little towns it has it's share of problems but it's also a diamond in the rough. I've been a big city gal all my life so I crave peace and quiet. Of the seven days I'll be in T or C I'll only use two for days trips (the VLA and Bosque Del Apache NWR). The rest of the time I plan on sitting in the courtyard of the motel with my feet up and nose in a good book or just watching the day go by. The cell phone will only be used in case of emergency and the laptop for uploading all the photos I plan on taking. Wi-fi would be a nice little bonus but it's not a deal breaker. I'm a solo traveller and quite content with my own company so no nightlife to speak of isn't a problem since I can make my own entertainment. I'm a naturally outgoing person and can make friends anywhere I go and I really enjoy talking with people and finding out about them and where they live. Does anybody know about the man in the wheelchair who goes around downtown T or C waving at passing cars? I remember that he had a long pole with a flag on it attached to the back of the wheelchair and the three or four times I passed him he waved each time. The previous time I was in T or C I was told to look out for him and was pleased to actually see him. Him I would like to stop and chat with. It's still five months away but I've already started marking the big black X's on my calendar. Maybe some peoples idea of a vacation wouldn't be spending a week in T or C but for this stressed out gal it sounds like a little piece of heaven.

If you show up the week of Thanksgiving Towanda then we'll have lunch Another story I have about my previous visit to T or C was how nice the man was who works at or owns the gas station directly across from McDonalds. My friend and I had spent the hot July day fishing at Lake Roberts and to say we stunk would be an understatement. After a rather harrowing drive from the lake down NM 35 we stopped at the station (which I think was a Conoco) and while I pumped gas my friend went into the garage to ask the man if there was a restroom we could use and a vending machine to get a snack and cold drink before heading back into the Black Mountains. I finished fueling and wandered into the garage and my friend and the man were engaged in an animated conversation about the local fishing scene. We spent the next twenty minutes discussing the best fishing spots at Elephant Butte and never once did this kind man let on that we smelled to high heaven. A few days later we took his advice and caught our limit at Elephant Butte. We drove back into T or C and stopped at the station and this gentleman seemed to remember us and was genuinely tickled that we had such success from his advice. People can complain all they want about the poverty, unkempt appearance, and drug scene in T or C but like every place on this planet there is good and bad and if you focus on the bad that's exactly what you get in return.
