The web page for Rancho de Chimayó in Chimayó says that the restaurant is closed due to the fire in July 2008, but gives no more information other than the opening will be delayed.
This is one of our favorite places to visit--lunch on the patio is a lovely experience. I hadn't heard of a fire there and wonder if anyone has any more info about it?
We drove by Saturday. The parking lot gate was locked. The exterior as seen from
the road appeared normal. Parts of the roof have tarps stretched over.
Hope that this helps.
I heard its being called arson, and two other fires in espanola as well, i was reading on the front page of the rio grande sun.., how there has been more than 4 fires in the past couple of weeks and they are all connected and are appering to be arson. I was trying to get the link but the rio grande sun's website will be down for a few days, go get this past weeks espanola paper to read about it.
The Rancho de Chimayó is currently scheduled to re-open sometime during late August. The delay is a result of most of the entire restaurant having to be re-built to meet current commercial building codes after the fire in July of 2008, which was started by a teenage arsonist in a woodpile next to the kitchen. This individual was later arrested and charged with also setting fire to two local residences, a business in Española and a live cow, but so far he hasn't been prosecuted for any of these crimes. For what it might be worth arson is not uncommon in this area - see Rio Grande Sun > Archives > News > Two Suspects Arrested in Chimayó Arson/Burglaries
I lived there growing up and I still go every chance I get to go visit my family and thats the biggest lie I have heard. Arson is not uncommon in this area? Yea..right. I dont think my mom wouldnt still be living there.
Not sure where the info is coming from, but Rancho de Chimayo did not have to be almost completely rebuilt for building code violations. Yes some things had to be brought to code, as we were grandfathered in on some codes. The latest delay is a result of addressing non fire related renovations, such as adding a new septic, and replacing 45 year old water lines. We have a new roof and some new floors, and we will have a new kitchen, but everything is the same. Want a question asked or to make a reservation, go to our web-site and send us an e-mail.
