Good for them. I hope their tests are positive and that they can begin producing as soon as possible. Hopefully we can begin building nuclear power plants again soon.

If we ever hope to NOT be dependent on OPEC & to become energy independent- we have to! ANd drill offshore & drill in ANWAR. It is really nice to see gas approaching $2 / gal. , however, anyone with half a brain should realize that it won't stay at these prices for long!

Nuclear power aside... drilling more oil isn't going to effect the price. Our oil is not nationalized... the price is set by the world market... and the US will always be a small player as far as world reserves and production are concerned.
The only way for the US to become energy independant is to develop an alternative to oil. I think the best way to do this is to impose a "tax" to set a floor on wholesale oil prices (like $70/barrel) and let the market find the best alternative. Companies can't afford to develop alternatives now because it is too risky... if oil drops too low the alternatives are no longer viable and all that investment is lost.

How right you are!!! Even our largest Oil Company Exxon-Mobil is the 17th largest in the world!!! The really big boys are foreign government monopolies, That make Trillions of dollars a year off us!!!
An interesting point about nuclear fuel is that the more of it can be made in the reactors than they use. Separating and reusing the new fuel is complicated but possible. The rest of the world and a couple of US labs have advanced the nuclear power technology far beyond the technology of the 1960's. IMHO it is past time to rebuild our electrical infrastructure using nuclear fission power plants to provide the base load.
I'll go with that Greg. We should have every option on the table and advance existing technologies. Fusion is a bit far in the future but eventually attainable.

The reason "breeder" reactors have been set aside is that they can VERY easily churn out weapons grade material is usable quantities. Basically the leading nuclear powers have deliberately decided to not use them as a part of keeping the lid on nuclear proliferation.
The reason Iran does NOT have nukes is that since they can't commercially buy one of these reactors, they're forced to go back to modern versions of the techniques used by the US in WW2 to mechanically and chemically refine material.
Circumstances are probably going to force France, GB, US, Canada, etc. to revisit that...
