I'm looking for recommendations for an optometrist in the garden district that has performed many lasik surgeries as I am considering having it done.

S/he could also be uptown, I just don't want to drive out to Metairie or somewhere.

Many thanks in advance

Only an opthalmologist can perform surgery. I am sure there are some at Touro but mine died.

Ok. Let me rephrase:

I'm looking for recommendations for an opthalmologist in the garden district that has performed many lasik surgeries as I am considering having it done.

S/he could also be uptown, I just don't want to drive out to Metairie or somewhere.

Many thanks in advance

The only person in the area that claims to have given several hundred lasik surgeries every month for the last 5 years is Jeffrey Singer. He did my eyes and, while there's nothing wrong the them, the experience was awful! I have a suggestion in Metairie (Perez), but I just wanted to tell you to avoid Singer! Don't be swayed by his advertisements.

I have a friend who called me about LASIK the other day. I had mine done by perez (Willie, he's at Eyecare Associates on Veterans) and couldn't be happier with the results. He's a little bit pricey, it cost about 3k total as opposed to Singer at 800/eye, but it was a great experience. I was in and out within half an hour, and when I came back the next morning I had 20/15 vision. This was four years ago, and I still have at least 20/20. I guess I just fail to understand why someone would be unwilling to pony up a little extra cash and/or drive to Metairie to have such an important procedure done. It was probably the best thing I've ever done for myself, but if the procedure had gone awry, I wouldn't be able to say the same.

As an aside, the friend (who lives uptown) said that he would probably go with Singer over perez, even though he admitted that his dad, who may well have been an opthamologist, used to work with a woman a large part of whose work consisted of fixing Singer's mess-ups.

You want to save on sunglasses, shop at Wal-Mart. But I wouldn't shop on price for my health.

I'm not sure where I said I was "unwilling to pony up a little extra cash" or that I wanted to save on sunglasses. I simply loathe to drive on interstates.

All of that aside, thank you for your recommendations, I'll look into Perez.

Does insurance normally pay for Lasik? I have Blue Cross.

Thanks again

You can get to Metairie without using I-10. No, insurance does not normally pay for what is basically cosmetic surgery. It pays for cataract removal.

Just one little reminder... you won't be the one driving, you'll have to have somebody take you there and back. Between being on Valium and having fuzzy eyesight, I-10 isn't something you'd be up for even if you were a racing fanatic.
