I don't see the problem as long as someone comes in to drain the site and fill it in. People love to claim that the East should be returned to swamp, but they choose to forget that Kenner, Metairie, Lakeview, Gentilly, Pontchartrain Park, and the East were all the same swamp. People don't seem to remember that West End, Lake Vista, Lakeshore, Lake Terrace, Pontchartrain Beach, UNO, etc. used to be open water. I'm not saying build as-is because it literally is a swamp, but with the proper earthwork it will be just like any other part of the city or better in that respect.

As far as the Corps. They're right, they can't because they can't adequately protect the city as a whole. Just look at the issues they're having with the new post-Katrina levees............... Exactly.

I didn't know all that used to be open water. Where was the original shore?

I'm unaware of what the issues are with the new levees.

To me anything that would rely on tourists or any visitors that matter would fail miserably due to its remote location and less than desirable area. Industrial is the way to go for out there I think.

My uncle's first job out of college around 1930 was as a civil engineer on the Lakeview project. Not sure where the original shoreline was but they built damns, pumped out the water, filled in dirt and created the drive along the lake.

After WWII, the house my parents bought that was about 2 blocks lakeside of Metairie Rd on Elmeer was flooded in a hurricane. No levees then. Not sure where the shoreline was.

Put a power plant there and forget about it. Or take the waterpark/backlot idea, and cut out the waterpark. I could see the site lending itself well to movie studios. These are probably the only two options that would create a few jobs that would pay more than $8/hour.

As hard as I try to be optimistic about anything NOLA, I have to agree. The East wasn't much of a location Pre-Storm, it's even less so now. Surely some of the infrastructure built out there, like the gigantic parking lot, could form a base for an industrial venture that needs Interstate access.

Yeah, the new levees are still COE designed and built, so there's bound to be issues. Name one South Louisiana water project they haven't screwed up, and I'll buy you a six-pack of Amber.

If you look at a map of the New Orleans area, the lakeshore juts out noticeably just east of the Jefferson/Orleans line. From there to the Lakefront Airport is all reclaimed land. Basically anything north of Robert E. Lee.

Former Six Flags site could become new amusement park or upscale outlet mall | NOLA.com

Does anyone actually think that an upscale outlet mall would work? It has the highway visibility, but most regional thru traffic will be on I-12 instead of I-10 or I-510. Another thing, I don't know what they consider upscale but it doesn't help that Gonzales is 60 miles to the west and Gulfport is 70 miles to the east. Then there's the "upscale" mall that Slidell is trying to build right across the twin span and they already have an empty outlet mall.

Does anyone know why Jazz Land failed? I'm surprised the city couldn't draw enough people to it with all the tourists. For instance, why is Orlando able to support a huge park but not New Orleans with a small one?

What's an upscale outlet mall? Like an outdoor Galleria?
