Looking at renting a vacation cottage in the Marigny late December. Need advice on safe boundaries, since we'll be walking home from the music clubs on Frenchmen late at night. Are there streets/areas we should avoid in our cottage search? Also, is on-street parking easy to find during the Christmas period? Are parking permits required? Thanks.

The area between St. Claude and the river is safe (relatively speaking). It starts to go downhill once you cross St. Claude Ave. and head towards the lake.

The closer you are to the river, the safer it is. Between Dauphine and the river would be ideal, and between Dauphine and St. Claude would be slightly less than ideal.

The boundary info. is very helpful. How about on-street parking? Easy or hard to find during Xmas season? Is a parking permit needed? Thanks.

The only place you might have difficulty is between Elysian Fields and Esplanade. Some streets require a 2hr residential parking permit in this zone. Downriver from Elysian Fields, there should be no issue aside from the Saturday night crowd that drives down there to go to Frenchmen.

Parking tip: Fold your side view mirror inward when you step out of the car.

We just returned from 2 weeks there, and my husband and I had noticed a lot of bikers in the Marigny. One afternoon we found the mirror on our car rental smashed, and it looked as though it got impacted by a bike handle.
